Boris speech marks official campaign launch

This morning marked the official launch of my campaign for re-election. I delivered a speech to a packed house in Richmond and wanted to share it with you:

Good morning and thanks for coming.

This election is being fought when Britain has been brought to the brink of bankruptcy. When Londoners have been going through some of the toughest times that we can remember and when the choice is between going back to the high tax, high spending creed of a bunch of taxpayer funded, Châteauneuf-du-Pape swilling, Outer London ignoring, car hating, semi-reformed Trotsyisksts and bendy bus fetishists whose approach to Government helped to get this country into this economic mess;

Or going forward with sensible, moderate and cost-effective government that invests in our future. That creates the conditions for business to grow. And that delivers on its promises.

Investing in London's high streets

Boris Johnson was in Harrow, Hillingdon and Ealing today, speaking to local residents about his 9 point plan for a Greater London.

At the Harrow Skills Centre - a partnership between Harrow College and the Local Education Authority that provides vocation training for 14-19 year olds - Boris spoke about point 6 of his 9 point plan: pledging to invest £221 million to transform local high streets and support small businesses.

Boris: Support apprenticeships to help unemployed back to work

Boris Johnson has today defended businesses that offer the young a chance of real work, saying they should be praised, not vilified:

We have more and more young people out of work, and who find themselves caught in a catch-22. They are told they can’t get a job unless they have some work experience; and they can’t get any work experience unless someone is willing to give them a job.

Boris: 100,000 apprenticeships by end of 2012

With over 40,000 new apprenticeships created in the capital in just over a year, London is the fastest growing UK region for new opportunities, Mayor Johnson announced today.

The Mayor's apprenticeship drive - launched last November and which saw Boris personally write to some of the capital's biggest employers urging them to do their share to get Londoners back into work - has been so successful that he has now upped his target to 100,000 by the end of 2012.

Mayor to young Londoners: Join Team London!

Mayor of London Boris Johnson today called on the 2,000 London graduates of this summer's National Citizen Service (NCS) pilot scheme to join Team London and keep volunteering in their communities.

Through Team London NCS graduates have the chance to give back to their communities, while at the same time they develop skills that could help secure them future employment. Team London is the Mayor's ambitious programme to mobilse an army of volunteers to improve life across the capital and participants work across three key areas - reducing crime in the capital, increasing opportunities for young people and improving quality of life by cleaning and greening the city.

Boris Johnson leads country in jobs drive

Mayor Boris Johnson is set to meet his target of creating 3,000 apprenticeships throughout the GLA group and its suppliers by 2012.

It comes as figures show in the last year more than 1,100 people joined apprenticeship schemes run by the GLA Group and its contractors, while Boris has also ensured jobs for more than 1,000 unemployed people in the past 12 months by requiring GLA suppliers to deliver job and training opportunities as part of the conditions of winning a contract.
