Heading in the right direction

By Toby Boutle, Haringey resident

I’ve lived in Stroud Green in Haringey for ten years now and I love it here.  Though one of the few downsides is the local council. For years has clobbered us with a hefty council tax bill, without much thought for value for money. And before Boris became mayor, the mayor’s share of council tax was going up and up.

So it has been a welcome relief that Boris has been able to put a stop to that - freezing his share for three years in a row.

At the same time, there have been some pretty noticeable day-to-day improvements in local services. For me personally, the long overdue upgrading to the Gospel Oak to Barking line, including the work to the stations, has been a particularly visible sign of that.

Before it was unpleasant and unreliable. But now the services are more frequent and it is a good way of getting from Crouch Hill to the east of the borough.

One sad reason why Haringey has been in the news in 2011 was, of course, the riots in Tottenham. Anyone who lives or works here will tell you that didn’t represent the Tottenham we all know. In that context Boris’s support for Spurs’ new stadium, which is a vital part of the wider regeneration projects going on locally, is very significant.

I know that, for many people, especially some older friends of mine, fear of crime on transport has been a really serious issue. So it has been good to see such dramatic falls in crime on the buses.

We’ve also just witnessed the demise of the hated bendy buses on the number 29 route, which ended in Wood Green - as a Routemaster fan, I’m very happy about that! And I’m looking forward to seeing (and being able to hop off!) the Boris Bus on the streets of Haringey some time soon.

So I’m going to be backing Boris in the 2012 elections to make sure London - and Haringey - keep heading in the right direction.
