Boris Johnson: Launch of 2012 Crime Manifesto
Boris Johnson today launched the crime chapter of his 2012 manifesto.
‘In 2008 I said I would take a personal lead in fighting crime and since then I have lived up to my word.
I have twice been out on dawn raids, twice I have wielded the door-smasher and entered premises where the police had reason to believe they would find a criminal suspect.
But on that day – elsewhere in the city hundreds of other arrests were made. Hundreds of people were stopped from making the lives of others a misery.Boris Johnson today launched the crime chapter of his 2012 manifesto.

Boris continues crackdown on neighbourhood crime
Mayor Boris Johnson has today started a major crackdown on neighbourhood criminals, which began early this morning as part of the 'war on crime' - a new approach to making Londoners feel safer championed by the new Metropolitan Police Commissioner.
In 2008 Boris promised to crack down on the scourge of crime and through his efforts to get more police on the streets, crime has fallen across London by 9.4%. But there is still more to do and Operation Hawk is one part of the Mayor's unrelenting focus on tackling crime.

Crime on transport continues to fall
Boris Johnson welcomed the news that crime on London's transport network has again fallen. According to new figures from the British Transport Police and the Met, in the last 12 months crime is down by 7% on the Underground and DLR and by 4% on the buses.
Since his election in 2008, the Mayor has worked closely with TfL to increase investment in transport safety and security. Safer Transport Teams have been introduced in all boroughs, meaning more than 400 extra officers patrolling the network and the popular booze ban was enacted, making journeys safer and more pleasant.

Boris and Met producing 'blueprint' for policing and cutting crime
The Home Secretary has praised Mayor of London Boris Johnson and the Met Police for producing the 'blueprint' for policing and cutting crime.
Speaking at the Spring Forum in Cardiff, Theresa May said: The way in which they have focused on London’s local needs, managed to get more resources onto the frontline, and worked together to cut crime is a blueprint for how police and crime commissioners can work together with chief constables in future.
The speech comes as latest figures show crime is down 8.2% overall across the capital since May 2008 when Boris became Mayor, youth crime is down 15% and robberies 21%. By May 2012 there will also be one million more visible police patrols per year than when Boris came into office.

Boris calls on young men in London to be mentors
Boris Johnson called on young men to sign up to his Mentoring Programme, aimed at driving down youth crime. Having already achieved a 15% fall in youth crime since 2008, the Mayor remains committed to working with communities to tackle this difficult issue. His mentoring scheme seeks to match black boys aged 10-16 at risk of offending with suitable mentors.
The call came at his third Community Conversation on tackling youth violence, held last night in Brent. The conversations aim to work directly with the communities most affected by serious youth violence. Event attendees got the chance to quiz the Mayor, Kit Malthouse, his Deputy Mayor for Policing, along with a panel of local experts, as well as take part in group workshops.
The next Community Conversation will take place in Haringey on 13 April.

Boris on his achievements
In an in-depth interview on today's Politics Show, Boris said he was "incredibly proud of what we've done across London" since coming to office:
"When people look at what we have achieved over the last three years, when they look at our record on crime, the successes we've achieved on affordable homes, all the things that we've done, I think people are very pleasantly surprised at what we're doing."
On London's settlement from the Comprehensive Spending Review:
"It was a tough settlement, but we've been able to make it work. Obviously I want to secure the best deal for London under any circumstances and my argument to Government is if you want this economy to grow, put the money in London."
On Policing:
"By making the economies that the police have been able to make in the backroom, in IT, in HR, all those sort of things, we're able to increase frontline police officers."
"The reason we are doing what we are doing is not just to have numbers high or to have 638 safer neighbourhood teams, the reason we are doing what we are doing is to continue driving down crime."

Boris announces pioneering ‘buy one get one free’ scheme to get more police on the street
The Mayor of London this morning announced an innovative ‘buy one get one free’ scheme to recruit more police officers in collaboration with local councils. This pioneering move will boost police presence on the streets and help to drive down crime even further.
While across the country police numbers are frozen or falling, the Met continues to expand. For every new police officer a borough pays for, the Mayor will ‘match fund’ the post and recruit another officer, meaning boroughs will effectively be given two police officers for the price of one - a huge boost to the numbers of uniformed officers patrolling local streets.
