Share your views on London
By Boris Johnson
A pretty great Londoner (William Shakespeare) once asked: 'What is the city but the people?' before answering: 'The people are the city'. London is the best big city in the world largely because of the people who live in it - you. That is why we want to know how you would take it forward.
As I hope you can tell from this questionnaire we are very proud of what we have achieved over the last three of years. For instance, we froze the Mayor’s share of council tax making taxpayers’ money go further than before. And we have ramped up the fight against crime which is now down by 9% making London the safest it has been for a decade.
I am proud to say that in spite of all the cutbacks across the country, London will have about 1,000 more warranted police officers at the end of my first term than there were in May 2008.
London had the first underground system in the world, but when I became Mayor it had been run down by neglect. Now we have secured the biggest investment in our transport for 80 years with the Tube upgrades and Crossrail. And we are delivering the Olympics on time and on budget.
We have exciting plans to take Greater London forward over the next five years, through the Olympics and beyond, to entrench London’s position as the greatest city in Europe – if not the world.
But we all know that we don’t have a monopoly on wisdom or ideas. The point of this exercise is to enlist your imagination – to help us to improve the services that we all use and rely on.
I am deeply proud of what London is achieving, and I hope you will help it to achieve even more. Please share your thoughts with us. Then you can help shape London the way you want it to be.
